The king shook his head without lifting his eyes from the face of the poet, arrayed in the veil of death, then said slowly, âNo, no. We ignored him while he was alive, filling the far corners of the realm with the apparitions of his soul and perfuming the sky with his breaths. Were we now to honor him in death, the gods would mock us and the brides of the spirits in the meadows and valleys would laugh at us. Bury him here where he gave up his spirit, and leave the lyre in his arms. If any of you wishes to honor him, go to his house and inform his sons that the king neglected his poet, who died, sorrowful, alone, solitary.â
Then he looked around him and added, âWhere is the Indian philosopher?â
The philosopher stepped forward and said, âI am here, mighty king.â
The king said, âSpeak. Speak, O sage. Will the laws of the universe return me as a king to this world, and return him as a poet? Will they clad my spirit in the body of the son of a mighty ruler, and incarnate his soul in the body of a matchless poet? Will the fates summon him once more before the face of eternity, to make poetry of life, and reinstate me so that I may bestow blessings on him and gladden his heart with gifts and presents?â
The philosopher replied, âAll that spirits desire, spirits attain. The same cosmic law that brings back the delights of spring when winter ends will restore you as a mighty king and him as a great poet.â
The kingâs features relaxed and his soul was reanimated. He walked toward the palace, thinking about the words of the Indian sage, repeating to himself, âAll that spirits desire, spirits attain.â
